LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A big honor today for a west Louisville leader. Reverend Charles Elliott from King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church now has a street named after him.

Anderson Street between 15th and 17th is now known as "The Reverend Charles Elliott Junior Way."

Metro Councilman David Tandy led the effort to thank Reverend Elliott for his fight for civil rights in the community.

"We're here today to honor and to recognize over a half century of work by a young man who has dedicated his life to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to be treated equally, be treated fairly and be able to maximize their God given talents in order to better our community," David Tandy (D), Metro Council 4, said.

"I thank God that I was able to stand here today and see what God has done," Elliot said.

Reverend Elliott organized the Kentucky Benevolent Association and Feed the People Program and was instrumental in getting legislation passed to recognize Martin Luther King Junior's birthday as a holiday in Kentucky.
