(WHAS11)-- A 14-year old southern Indiana teen is helping those in need during the winter in her very own way.

Makenzie Smith, a freshman at Borden High School, founded Makenzie's Coat Closet in 2006 when she was only 7 years old.

On Wednesday the organization gave out more than 4,000 coats at St. Vincent de Paul. In the seven years she’s been collecting coats, Makenzie has collected more than 18,000 coats.

This year alone she has already given out 270 brand new coats, gloves and scarves and they are already taking donations for next year.
