JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- The latest Amazon Fulfillment center in Indiana celebrated its grand opening on Friday. That makes it the fourth center in the Hoosier State.
The building on Patrol Road in Jeffersonville is the largest fulfillment center in North America. Employees fill thousands of orders each day.
"Every day is fast-paced," associate Tom Fanz said.
"This is the start of a whole lot more to come...Amazon welcome to Jeffersonville," Mayor Mike Moore said.
The center opened for business in October of 2012 and has since employed around 900 people.
Amazon associate Alex Weiss was unemployed for four months before he was hired on. He says he now feels a sense of job security because of the company's global reach.
"We get stuff to Louisville, to Canada, to Australia..." Weiss said.
The center is more than a million square feet. There are also plans to expand its operations twice this year. Currently the facility is only using about 50 percent of its size.
According to Amazon officials, those expansions will happen in the Spring of 2013 and at the end of 2013.
Officials say by 2015 more than 1,100 people will be employees at the facility.
