LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office says that Robert Levine, 46, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. Police say he may have tried to kill a woman before turning the gun on himself.

Neighbors say the woman’s children were inside the Newburg home Wednesday night.

"It was like pow and another big pow. It was two gunshots almost back to back," said neighbor Mary Poynter.

James Fugett, a Vietnam veteran, has heard a lot of things in his lifetime but even he was stunned.

"We thought that he had shot the cat when we heard the shot," said Fugett.

Gunshots erupted from the home at the 5000 Roederer Drive which is an area with a lot of children.
Around 9:00 Wednesday night, police found a woman with gunshot wounds inside the house and a man dead.

Poynter said the scene was "complete chaos, police men pulled out and they all came out with guns."

Neighbors say the two were dating and the woman moved-in a few months ago with her two kids.

"This little girl come running up the yard, knocking on the door. By the time I had opened the door she had run down the street there," said Fugett.

Neighbors we talked to did not know much about the accused shooter that left the woman in the hospital.

"He wouldn't speak too much even if you tried to wave and say hey. Really strange he would do all his yard work like late at night at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning," said Poynter.

The woman is being treated at University Hospital.
