LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - A LMPD officer is on paid administrative leave after he shot an unarmed man on Tuesday night. It happened at 24th and Chestnut streets in West Louisville.

Officer Chauncey Carthan was off duty in plain clothes and in an unmarked car when he got into an altercation with a man in another car, according to police.

“At some point both the officer, as well as the individual, exited their vehicles at which time the officer did identify himself,” Alicia Smiley, LMPD spokesperson, said.

Police said the man did not comply with the officer and then Carthan shot him, but police said the shooting victim was not armed.

“They don't need to be assuming that somebody's armed just because they are in this certain part of town,” a resident said.

“What was the man doing? You can't put it all on the police,” resident Larry Leslie said.

The victim was taken to University Hospital where he was treated and released.

Carthan is part of the LMPD Narcotics\Intelligence unit and was hired in January of 2001. The Public Integrity Unity is investigating.
