(WHAS11) -- Before the warnings and advisories went into effect, Kentucky transportation officials got to work mobilizing their crews.
A fleet of trucks waited to fill up with salt Tuesday afternoon at the District 4 depot in Elizabethtown. The roads were pretreated with brine. Once the wintry mix moved in they began treating with salt and calcium chloride.
Some schools canceled evening activities and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College canceled night classes.
Further up north drivers along I-65 faced snow, slush and a layer of ice.
"The roads were really bad and progressively getting worse. I did 15 mph and I slid several times," Lisa Rhodes said.
State road crews said they're prepared for the worst.
"We have anticipated that it could go until 3 or 4 a.m. So we'll change shifts at midnight tonight," said Patty Dunaway, District 4 Chief Engineer.
