LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Kentucky's agriculture commissioner says he has some big lawmakers who support the legalization of hemp including Senator Rand Paul and former CIA Director James Woolsey. The hearing is set for next Monday.

But the Kentucky State Police commissioner says it's not a good idea while they both appeared on Kentucky Tonight on KET.

Supporters of industrial hemp say it would be a positive development for Kentucky’s economy and farmers.

The bill would only regulate hemp production but the federal government would still need to lift its ban on the crop.

Hemp and marijuana are the same species but are genetically distinct.
