FRANKFORT, Ky. (WHAS11) – Kentucky’s Agriculture Department says a deadline is drawing near to get hemp seeds released from customs and border patrol.

A spokesperson for the Kentucky Agriculture Department says they’ll go to federal court Wednesday if the seeds are not released.

250 pounds of hemp seeds were shipped to Kentucky from Italy to start industrial hemp pilot programs at 6 universities including the University of Louisville.

Despite changes in Kentucky and federal law to legalize industrial hemp, a host of federal agencies will not release the seeds that are now held at Louisville International Airport.

Some of the seeds did make it into the Commonwealth and the first industrial hemp pilot program will be launched this week.
