LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Nearly 25 media outlets filled the KFC Yum! Center practice facility Wednesday to cover Louisville guard Kevin Ware's first news conference since his injury.

Ware was injured in the first half of the Cardinals’ 85-63 Midwest Regional Championship victory over Duke. He underwent successful surgery in Indianapolis on Sunday night to repair a broken bone in his right leg.

From CNN to Sports Illustrated, Kevin Ware has captured the nation's attention, not just because of the shock value, but the reaction of his teammates and the calming influence Kevin provided.

Ware spoke to the media for about 20 minutes and his mom even took to the mic saying that she could not be more proud of her son and his actions. Rick Pitino was clearly emotional upon entering the room, having spent the hours before re-telling this story.

Ware spoke with ESPN  about when he realized his leg was broken.

“Honestly, I thought it was my ankle. Coach P went to help me up and he glanced at my leg and his eyes just got huge. I was looking at Coach P wondering what is wrong with him. I looked down at my leg and it was just automatic shock. And looking at the guys around me like Russ, Chane and all those guys start crying," Ware said.

“They went out there and did that for me. Words cannot explain. I love those guys to death. I would not trade them in for the world. Those are the brothers I have never had. I just keep telling them the job is not done yet. We still have two more games to win.”

Ware has been cleared to travel with the team to the Final Four in Atlanta.
