Louisville, KY (WHAS11) - One in five Kentuckians now needs assistance, according to Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.
Beshear made the announcement in Frankfort Thursday at the Kentucky Employees Charitable Campaign kick-off. The governor applauded state employees for stepping up to help those in need.
"This is a tough time,” he said. “I don't have to tell you that."
Employees from the various state departments filled the Frankfort Convention Center on Thursday.
They heard from the governor as well as the six charities they support.
The WHAS Crusade for Children is one of those charities.
Dawn Lee is the CEO of the WHAS Crusade for Children.
“The Kentucky Employee Charitable Campaign is so important to the WHAS Crusade for Children because it allows us to involve state employees across the entire state, to get involved in helping children."
State employees gave $1.4 million in 2009.
The goal for 2010 is just over $1.5 million.
