Man charged with assault after missing man found dead in Ky. field

TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (NEWS RELEASE) – On Aug. 1, at 3 p.m. Kentucky State Police arrested Joseph Tooley, 32, of Tompkinsville. Tooley was arrested and charged with assault, 4th degree, in reference to an incident involving Mark Proffitt which occurred on Friday, July 26.

KSP detectives found the body of Mark Proffitt in an overgrown field at 10:55 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, near the intersection of M.O. Lane and Richards Drive in Tompkinsville.  Proffitt, of Tompkinsville, had been reported missing on Saturday, July 27. 

Proffitt was pronounced deceased by the Monroe County Coroner.  The cause of death is to be determined.  An autopsy is scheduled to be performed at the State Medical Examiner's office and pending autopsy results additional charges may follow concerning Tooley.

Tooley is currently lodged in the Monroe County Jail.
