(WHAS11) – People across Kentuckiana will be heading to the polls to vote in Tuesday’s election. Polls show Incumbent Democrat Steve Beshear with a commanding lead in the Governor's race but his Republican challenger says late developments could be a game-changer.

Before the polls open, negative advertising and last minute campaigning are in full swing. Many ads are being paid for by outside groups. However, Governor Steve Beshear says he is trying to stay focused on the issues.

"We can't control what other campaigns do. When you are as far behind as I think that campaign is, I think they pull out desperate tactics. In the end, I think people see right through that stuff," says Governor Beshear.

In the final WHAS11/Courier Journal Bluegrass Poll before the election, the Governor leads by 25 points which is six points closer than a poll one month ago. But Republican candidate David Williams, making a last state-wide tour to push for votes, said he is still confident the Republicans can pull out a win.

"I think the informed people of this state are going to look at this election and we are going to have a victory," says Williams.

While the Republicans stumped at Bowman Field, the Democrats spoke to supporters at the American Legion Hall. Beshear told more than 300 that during tough economic times he has still balanced the budget.

"We balanced the budget nine times and we gonna balance it again," says Beshear.

Williams turned the page on what he calls “negative coverage” of him by print media and has instead told his supporters to read Monday's headline for the Courier Journal.

"$350 million hole in the budget this year. This is a Governor that will tell you folks out in the public that he's balanced the budget maybe he'll finally come clean," says Williams.

WHAS11 will be reporting election results tomorrow, as soon as they start coming in.
