LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A local band made up of Kentuckiana high school students is getting ready to head to California to compete in School Jam USA.
The members of Beyond Doubt have been working together for just over a year now. With each performance, the kids are hitting higher and higher notes. They leave to go compete in California in just a couple of weeks.
"With only being together for a year, it's pretty amazing how you can head out to California in such a short time," lead vocalist Allison Nelson said.
The band says being able to compete in School Jam is a huge honor. Out of thousands of entries, only eight made the finals.
"I'm pretty sure when I heard it, I jumped through the roof with excitement," bass guitarist Matt Purlee said. The group has spent the last year playing gigs around Kentuckiana. They are not just performing music, they are also performing a balancing act between their band and school.
"There have been times I've stayed up half the night doing my homework because of this, but it's a sacrifice you have to make," Purlee said.
Beyond Doubt plays original songs, inspired by all types of music.
"It's my escape from everything," Nelson said. "It's the one thing you can go to that will just blow your mind away."
On January 13 they will be holding a special fundraiser concert at Wicks Pizza in New Albany. That will run from 4-8 p.m. For the fundraiser, Beyond Doubt will have a special guest Johnny Edwards, the former lead singer from Foreigner.
If the group wins in California, they will go to perform at the School Jam finals in Germany.
