K-9 partner to slain officer enjoying retirement

   BARDSTOWN, Ky. (AP) -- The K-9 partner to a slain Bardstown police officer is living with his handler's family in retirement.
 
   Figo worked with Officer Jason Ellis until his death in an ambush in May. WLEX-TV in Lexington reported that since Ellis' funeral Figo has been living with the slain officer's family.
 
   Bardstown Police Det. Chris Smith says Ellis' widow, Amy, and his children are very attached to the retired police dog.
 
   Smith and other Bardstown officers have been taking turns spending the night with the family. At first, Smith says, Figo was drawn to the scent of their gun holsters, perhaps making him think his handler was back.
 
   Now, Smith says, Figo is becoming protective of the family -- a good sign for the dog's adjustment as well as the family's.
