LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The sentencing phase began Thursday for Steven Pettway after he was convicted of murder in the shooting death of Troya Sheckles.

Several family members of the victim and the defendant took the stand before the jury left and returned with a recommendation of 55 years in prison - 50 years for the murder conviction and five years for intimidation.

If the judge agrees with the jury's recommendation, Pettway will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

WHAS11's Karma Dickerson is in the courtroom and will have a live report coming up during the evening newscasts.
