MCKEE, Ky. (AP) -- The head of an eastern Kentucky local government is asking for an investigation into the sheriff's office.
Jackson County Judge-Executive William Smith told WYMT-TV in Hazard the county fiscal court has had to cover Sheriff Denny Peyman's payroll since he took office in January 2011. Smith said the department owes the court more than $278,000.
The fiscal court wants state auditors or the state attorney general's office to investigate the sheriff's office.
However, Peyman said he has asked both state and federal authorities to investigate not only his office, but all Jackson County government. Peyman said he has increased enforcement, which has raised the cost of operating his office.
The court has formed the Jackson County Police Department, which employs three of the sheriff's deputies.
