LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – They were once so problematic in school settings, teachers in Jefferson County would take them away from students.

Eight major high schools, from Ballard to Valley High, now want to allow cell phones in the classroom to help students learn.

Principals can ask for a waiver and they must submit a plan saying how each waiver is reviewed on an individual basis.

Katy Zeitz, principal at Waggoner High School, explained why she approves of the idea of allowing students to use cell phones in a special meeting held Monday evening.

“They need to be ready when they're not with us and off to college they're going to have to find things on their own, understand how to prepare themselves and find the things they're looking fors we want to that and using them instructionally in the classroom," she said.

The school board is expected to vote on the waivers at a meeting on Monday, September 9.
