(WHAS11) - An investigation is underway in Clark County involving the chief of the Sellersburg Fire Department.
The investigation involves his alleged actions at the scene of an accident in which one of his own employees - a Clark County Emergency Medical Technician - was killed.
The investigation centers on Chief Greg Dietz, who has headed the Sellersburg Fire Department for about a decade.
While we don't know much about the nature of the possible charges, we've been told it all centers on a terrible crash that happened Wednesday afternoon.
Mangled metal littered the curvy, rural highway Wednesday as rescue workers scrambled to try to save two of their own.
An ambulance ran off the road and crashed into a tree, killing paramedic David Gundle and injuring his partner.
Both were under the command of Sellersburg Fire Chief Greg Dietz.
According to sources, Chief Dietz arrived on the scene and became angry over whether his agency or the Clark County Sheriff's Office was in charge, especially concerning where to land the medical helicopter.
Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden confirmed to WHAS the incident is under investigation.
Sellersburg Police Chief Russ Whelan says Dietz worked for 15 years as a volunteer auxiliary police officer.
He asked Dietz to step aside today.
WHAS11 was told Dietz wasn't in, but his truck was parked in his parking space when we tried to talk to him.
Most firefighters were attending Gundle's visitation Friday afternoon.
WHAS11 requested and were denied the audio tape of the radio communications involving the crash on the grounds that it is now evidence.
Monday night, the fire department will vote on whether to keep Chief Dietz or select a new chief.
The vote coming up Monday is an annual vote on the department's leadership.
WHAS11 tried to talk to two fire board members, but were unable to reach them.
