LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Inspection work on the Kennedy Bridge is moving from I-65 South to I-65 North on Friday morning. That means inspection of the bridge is ahead of schedule.

For those that live in Indiana and commute to Kentucky on the bridge, that’s good news in the morning. Getting across the river will be a little easier. But, some drivers say they really haven’t noticed it anyway. “Really it hasn’t been too bad. I think if you get a little bit later, it gets worse,” Jerry Helbig said. He drives across the bridge every morning.

Ohio River Bridges Project Downtown Crossing spokesperson Mindy Peterson said crews are trying to take advantage of the window of time being ahead of schedule has opened for them. The two right hand lanes of 65 North will close late Friday morning, after rush hour traffic in the morning, but before the evening rush hour. “Yeah, it’s going to be a bit slower,” said Helbig, “But, it’s just something we’re going to have to deal with for the next three years.”

Over the weekend, crews will be working on the bridge. “Now, the weekend work, at times, may require crews to take one more lane,” Peterson explained. That would leave only one northbound lane open. But, it would open up again before 5 AM Monday morning.

So, if you plan on heading north on the Kennedy Bridge, make sure you leave yourself a little extra time. Though it may be frustrating, it’ll help move the bridge project along down the road. “Really, what this adds up to, is an investment now. If they put this time in now, and get in and make plans, and design plans and everything for the re-decking in 2016, they’re going to save a lot of time come 2016,” said Peterson.

All lanes on the bridge will be re-opened once the inspection is complete, hopefully by the end of next week.
