(WHAS)--Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said public schools face a tough road when it comes to state budget cuts with kindergarten through 12th grade education already facing $300 million in reduced state funding.

But Daniels said it could be worse and he had some tough words about the New Albany/Floyd County School board's decision to close four elementary schools.

"When I looked to se they have one of the worst records in the state in getting dollars to the classroom, I'm not saying the steps they have taken are in error, but some are called for.  It's the things thye haven't done and refuse to do that I would draw attention to," Daniels said.

The governor said the district placed a lot of the blame on state budget cuts and that claim is ridiculous.

If you can't start and BUDGET at the local school then you can't budget at the next step. It is not the state's fault, nor does the state OWE you anything. You reap what you sow - you voted NO at the polls in May. You spoke. When will people realize that you cannot buy things with NO MONEY. If you can go to kroger's and buy groceries with no money, then you need to go run the school system. Parents are not interested in schools or they would vote to help pay that tax levy -- LESS than $100 PER YEAR per property. Public education is not an entitlement. I'm in Ky and say the exact same thing -- I have no sympathy when you do and have done nothing to help yourself. In fact the State/Fed. ought to cut all funds because of your mismangement of what you have been given.
