(WHAS11) -- Two people died Thursday night in a house fire possibly caused by lightning strike.
19-year-old English Moore and 83-year-old Wakley Hayden died Thursday night after a fire broke out at a home in the 3900 block of South 3rd St. According to the coroner, both died of smoke inhalation.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom around 6:45 p.m. in the area just before the home caught fire.
"I thought it was lightning," Ashley Wolfe said.
"The storm came through and there was hail and rain and I just heard a loud crack," said Catherine Capp.
Firefighters said both victims were trapped in the home. Hayden was bedridden.
"Because of the heavy smoke and amount of fire it took us awhile to get to the victims, but we were able to extract them," said Fire Chief Greg Frederick.
"The worst sight was when I saw one of them carry a girl out and had her on the grass and tried to revive her, but you just knew," Capp said.
It took around 30 minutes and 30 firefighters to get the blaze under control. Firefighters do not have an exact cause, but are investigating the possibility of a lightning strike.
