LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) --It was Thursday, May 17, when three people were killed and three more injured in a pair of shootings in the west Louisville neighborhood of Parkland. In one of them, a woman allegedly shot and killed another while police and dozens of others were on the scene of a previous shooting that involved their family members.

Louisville's homicide rate climbed to 62 in 2012 11 more than last year. It's the first year since 2008 that the homicide numbers have not declined.

Mayor Greg Fischer wants to hire a new violence prevention director by the end of March.

In the fall -- LMPD installed the Viper Unit, focusing on intelligence to catch the most violent offenders.

Five shootings claimed multiple victims, including in September when Mahmoud Hindi allegedly gunned down two of his neighbors at an East End homeowner's association meeting. Two months earlier police say John Devine killed his estranged girlfriend and two young sons in PRP.

About half of the cases in 2012 are unsolved. If you have any information call LMPD's anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD.
