HILLVIEW, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Hillview city council passed a new ordinance on Monday night that imposes an earlier curfew for anyone under 18. It was put in place after a spike in vandalism and car break-ins in recent months.

“My husband’s car was broken into and they stole $7,000 worth of tools. They hit 21 cars in our neighborhood in one night,” said Stephanie Hurst.

The curfew starts at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 12:01 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. The curfew is enforced until 6 a.m. every morning.

“I think that it’ll be a great start, but the children that listen to the curfew are not the problem. So, I don’t know if it’s going to do a whole lot of good,” said Hurst.

Parents will also be held accountable if their kids are caught out past the curfew. Police can write citations that result in fines.

The curfew will go into effect when the new ordinance is published, likely within 10 days.
