Hand transplant program at Jewish Hospital gets $850K

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The renowned hand transplant program at Jewish Hospital is receiving $850,000 in federal funding.

The Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center and UofL will use the funding for a clinical trial of a new treatment that will help prevent rejection of hand transplants.

The funding comes as part of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine Research Program.

To date the program has performed a total of nine hand transplants on eight patients.
