LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Monday marks Veteran’s Day across the country and locally, volunteers took time to honor men and women in the armed services at Cave Hill Cemetery Saturday afternoon.
The group Flags for Vets placed about 6,700 flags on veteran’s graves paying tribute to those who gave their lives for our country.
“When a fellow joins us and signs under the flag, he has given his life,” Reverend Forest Chilton, a veteran said. “I think that man can do no more than give their life to their country.”
The event began with a parade of flags where each volunteer carried a flag representing a veteran buried in Cave Hill’s National Military Section.
The solemn ceremony featured a performance of the Star Spangled Banner and the laying of a wreath at the Unknown Soldier Memorial.
