(WHAS11) -- The next time you’re shopping for produce keep your local farmer in mind.
During the summer many sell their goods on the weekends and that can benefit your community.
Local money for local goods and it's all in a goods days work for Freddy Berrick
“We're having a ball. This is what I love to do,” Berrick, local farmer, said.
He has been a local farmer from Taylorsville Ky. for 10 years.
On Saturday he and his son are at the Jeffersontown Farmers Market selling their produce.
Even though Freddy loves what he does he says business has been tough.
“It’s been a battle just trying to get people to understand....if you want fresh vegetables, this is the only place to get fresh vegetables,”
And buying local is better for the local economy.
According to an Andersonville Development Corporation study every $100 spent locally creates $68 dollars for the local economy.
Compare that to $43 when that $100 is spent at a chain.
And customers at farmers markets can appreciate produce that was picked just a day prior, compared to food picked four to seven days before being placed on supermarket shelves.
“This is where you buy the stuff that’s fresh. When you go to Wal-Mart and you buy stuff and you bring it home and two days its runt, 'I just bought that.' That’s because it’s not fresh. They do a good thing. But we do it better,” Berrick said.
Freddy Berrick says his business continues to grow and he says he's looking for more help.
