A vigil was held Monday night for a man shot and killed by metro police officers.

Family and friends say it was a situation that just shouldn't have happened.

“They didn't care at all. They just shot him down like he was a deer or something.”

Four LMPD officers remain on administrative leave after shooting and killing a man at Iroquois Homes on Saturday night.

Police say Donnie Miles came at them with a hammer and that's when they shot him.

Metro Police Chief Robert White says he hasn't determined if the shooting was justified because the investigation is ongoing.

Bu, he says the officers had training to deal with situations like this.

“It appears the officers attempted to subdue him with reasonable force.”

Chief White says the officers tried to tase miles and tried to use tear gas but say nothing calmed him.

There will be a community meeting Tuesday night at the Gospel Missionary Church at 3226 Vermont Avenue.

Anyone with concerns about violence and police presence are asked to come and voice those concerns.

They will later be taken to police.

Seriously people how many times will 911 be called, asking for help. Officers arrive and do everything possible to stop the mad man, and in the end a crowd is upset because they did their jobs. They tased the man not once but twice, were they to wait until he possibly threw it at one of them, or stomped back into the house maybe this time to get a gun. I am not in he law enforcement, nor is anyone in my family, but if they were I would want them to return to me each night and I'd hope that others would too. If these people want to over react each time someone is shot, them I suppose they should deal with them their selves. Mentally ill or not, the officers have no way of knowing that, and are they suppose to really care if they are being threatin? Sorry but anyone act as if they were gonna harm myself or my children, mentally ill or not, I would have a duty of protecting us...

They tazed this man TWICE and that didn't stop him. If that didn't put him on the ground, how can anyone be sure that 4 men can put him down without one of them getting hurt? Oh, I guess just because they are police officers, they are expendable, is that it? Get over it people. If you go after a police officer or someone else with any kind of weapon, they are going to defend themselves and I support that. This was an unfortunate incident and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this man had drugs in his system. I can't wait to see how long it takes before somebody comes forward with a lawsuit wanting money because that's what it always comes down to.

Obviously, no one wants to be hit with a hammer. But I'm not in law enforcement, or anything related, and right off the top of my head I can think of at least three ways that FOUR men can disarm a person with a hammer, with little or no injury to anyone. Why couldn't they? What are the levels of force? Minimum, Reasonable, then all the way to Deadly? That's ridiculous! I could see it better if it were just one officer, but FOUR? I don't blame the officers, they were only abiding in their obviously substandard training; I blame the Chief for not having them trained in alternatives. I realize there is always more to a story than what's on the surface, but I'm just not going to be convinced that there was no other way to settle this. I'm just not.

Once again it seems the LMPD are taking it on the chin for defending themselves from an attacker. As bad as the situation may be can one tell if an attacker is mentally disturbed as he is coming toward you with a hammer? If that is possible then I fail to see how. Probably anyone who attackes a Police Officer with whatever, is a little off plum anyway.
