Fort Knox soldier killed in Afghanistan

Zabul Province, Afghanistan – A Fort Knox Soldier died Saturday of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire in Zabul Province, Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Spc. Angel L. Lopez, 27, of Parma, Ohio, was a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to Company A, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

He began his military service in January 2012 and arrived to Fort Knox in July 2012.

This was Lopez’s first deployment, and he is the first 3/1 Soldier to be killed during this deployment.

His awards and decorations include: Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Combat Star, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NATO medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Fort Knox will hold a Duke remembrance ceremony in Lopez’s honor at a time to be determined.  A memorial service was held in Afghanistan Tuesday.
