LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The patriotic colors of red, white and blue filled Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville in honor of Memorial Day.

Volunteers placed more than 25,000 flags in the ground honoring those who have served and are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Shively resident Mellicha Fowler felt privileged to place flags in honor of the soldiers.

“I come from a huge military family and it’s just an honor and privilege to do this for the fallen; the past, the present, the MIA’s [and the] POW’s,” she said.

After Memorial Day, the 25,000 flags that are placed at Waterfront Park will be collected and placed on veteran’s graves across the country.

6,000 of those flags will remain in the area.
