LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer addressed the progress that has been made in the past 12 months since enacting a task force aimed at reducing violence and creating safer neighborhoods.

Fischer was joined by Anthony Smith, director for Safe Neighborhoods, and said that crime is decreasing in Louisville and the city has implemented several programs and partnerships to continue the trend.

The task force was created following a murder on May 17, 2012, when a pregnant woman shot and killed Makeba Lee.

Cheetrara Goldsmith pulled the trigger on Lee, that day, and is still in jail awaiting her murder trial.

Mayor Fischer also addressed the important need to prevent young adults from becoming future criminals.

“We can not be apologetic when it comes to encouraging young people to get a high school degree,” he said.
