LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-  More than $120,000 in federal stimulus money has been given to help keep the Exploited Children's Help Organization (ECHO) running.

On Monday, Congressman John Yarmuth came to Louisville to see how that money was being spent.

Stimulus money has been used to create jobs through the ECHO program and pay for numerous youth activities.

Yarmuth says recent studies have shown when the economy is down and more people fall into poverty, instances of child abuse go up.

“In addition, the recovery act targeted the ripple effects of a struggling economy, including initiatives to protect our children from the rising threat of abuse,” said Yarmuth.

Organizers with ECHO say the money is also used to expand the search for volunteers, who teach abused children safety lessons through things like craft projects.
