Louisville, Ky. (WHAS) – The Festival of Lights has begun and members of the Jewish faith lit the first candle on the Menorah at Jewish Hospital for Hanukkah.

The Fox family lit the first candle at Jewish Hospital in memory of their aunt Hilda.

She was the head nurse at Jewish Hospital 57 years ago and before she died, she made it her job to light the Menorah each night during Hanukkah.

The family tradition continues through her nieces and nephews and their children.

“People seem to be interested in it because it really is one of the few public displays where the holiday can be seen and you know, commemorated,” Hilda’s nephew Lawrence Fox said.

Hilda Fox died during Hanukkah in 1956. She was 42 years old.

Her brothers and sisters and their children have continued to light the Menorah at Jewish Hospital in her honor since then.
