Louisville, Ky. (WHAS) – Sunday marked the beginning of the fall meets at Churchill Downs on a brisk October day.

“It [the weather] is not bad actually. It’s good compared to where we are from,” 16-year-old attendee Lacey Packard said.

Packard came to Churchill Downs for the first time ever from Casper, Wyoming where temperatures reached 37 degrees.

The 21-day meet begins with two-year-old thoroughbreds, which Churchill Downs calls, ‘Stars of Tomorrow.’

Churchill Downs recently invested $9 million in renovations.

“We're always trying to grow business here at Churchill Downs,” Darren Rogers, the senior director of communication at Churchill Downs said.  “And we think developing these new spaces will help us achieve those goals.”

The fall meet will continue until November 25th.
