LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- During a special meeting Friday afternoon, the Kentucky Fair Board approved a request for proposals to build a hotel at a vacant property across Phillips Lane from Gate One at the Kentucky Expo Center.

The board will be looking for a developer to build a 600-room convention hotel with a restaurant and lounge, indoor pool, business center and fitness facility. The hotel would connect to the Expo Center by sky-walk. This is the third time since 2007 the board has tried for a hotel of this kind. But, an upturn in the economy and other developments in the area have the board believing this is the right time.

Board president and CEO Rip Rippetoe said the possible re-opening of Kentucky Kingdom could offer just the push they need to draw developers in. He says they often have clients who say they would be more likely to book the Expo Center for conventions and shows if a hotel like this existed. The hotel would be developed at no cost to the state.
