LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Jeffersontown Police arrested a mother after they say she left her baby girl home alone for more than 40 minutes. She says that isn't true.
Dawn Harris was charged with wanton endangerment and spent Tuesday locked up.
"I was scared, I started crying and I've never been to jail before," Harris said.
She agreed to talk as long as WHAS11 didn't show her face during the interview. According to a police report, Jeffersontown detectives found Harris' 14-month-old daughter, Zailyn, home alone for 42 minutes sleeping face down on a bed which was covered with plastic.
"I didn't leave her in no danger," she said.
It happened at the 2300 block of Arbor Pointe Place Tuesday morning. The police report states the bedroom windows were left open with no screens.
But Harris says they were covered all the time.
"I'm on Section 8, if anybody reports I don't have screens they can get in trouble with a fine." Harris said.
But the report also states there was a bathtub filled with water, a knife on the kitchen counter and no child gate blocking the second floor steps. Harris showed WHAS11 all of these things and says detectives are wrong. She claims her child was safe.
The single mother of two says she went to the corner gas station for medicine because her sinuses were acting up. That's when she says a maintenance worker suddenly called police instead of calling her.
"So as soon as I came back the police pulled up at the same time," Harris said.
Harris said she was gone for 15 minutes.
The Police Chief did not talk on Wednesday and only referred WHAS11 to the police report.
