(WHAS11) - St. Patrick’s Day was a day for celebration in the Larue County school system because they were honoring this year's Excel Award winning teacher.
At Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, second grade teacher Bev Heady received the Excel Award from WHAS11’s Gary Roedemeier.
Bev Heady was over 40-years-old when she enrolled in school to become an elementary teacher and that was 18-years-ago.
But Ms. Heady is an extraordinary teacher, who is a great role model for other teachers in the Larue County’s system.
In Bev Heady's Larue County classroom, there are 20 kids, three small groups and that translates to lots of individual instruction.
In reading and math, it's become more personalized for each student, especially for those who have fallen behind.
And her approach to reach kids no matter what brought Bev Heady the Excel Award.
She is, quite honestly, one of the oldest teachers to win an Excel Award, but there is still plenty of time to spend her $1,000 teacher grant from E.ON US.
And she thinks her age is an advantage.
“Because of my age, I was determined to be better. I didn't want to be known as that old woman that doesn't know anything and I just kept striving to be the best I could be,” she says.
And her students love that approach in class.
She's a leader for students and other teachers.
Bev Heady is still growing, still teaching, still excelling.
Congratulations to Bev Heady!
Next week, the Excel Award moves to Hardin County for that school system’s winner this academic year.
Then in April and May, WHAS11 be in the Greater Clark County System, plus Shelby and Oldham County.
