(WHAS11) -- Ind. conservation officers are searching for the person who shot and killed a rare and endangered bird.

Only about 500 Whooping Cranes exist nationwide and killing them is a crime.

Conservation officers in Jackson County, Ind. say someone shot one of the birds near the Muscatatuck River Basin.

Officers are offering a reward for any information that leads them to an arrest.
