ELIZABETHTOWN, Ind. (WHAS11) -- The annual WHAS-TV Excel Award for Elizabethtown has been won by fourth grade teacher Pamela Hinton of Helmwood Heights Elementary School.
Hinton won the award after a rigorous competition with four other nominees from the Elizabethtown Independent School System.

Hinton says the Excel process was a learning experience for her. She said, it helped her examine herself as a teacher.

There was not an empty seat in the auditorium as Hinton was honored.

Her family sat on the front row, including Adam Hinton, the teacher's special needs son. Pam credits her son with helping her become a true teacher.

She says Adam taught her that every child can learn at high levels.

In her classroom, Pam was honored by her fourth grade students who brought her Butterfinger chocolate bars, her favorite treat.

But the Excel teacher says, when it comes to students, there are no cookie cutter kids. Each child has strengths that can be expanded and weaknesses that must be identified. She wants to help kids the most when they struggle.

And her principal says Pam is a great teacher even at a time when schools are struggling with changing standards and budget cuts.

Her colleagues say Pam goes right ahead and doesn't see anything negative.

In the classroom she never gives any indication of the difficulties that teachers face.

She just marches ahead. Pamela Hinton wins the Excel award as a good solider of education and a teacher that never gives up on a student.
