LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Gary Stewart, the suspect in Wednesday's double murder-suicide had a troubled past, according to court documents obtained by WHAS11 News.

Since 2001, Stewart has been charged with 27 crimes. Of those, most have been traffic offenses, but he has been found guilty of terroristic threatening involving an assault and faced charges for menacing and stalking.

WHAS11 also discovered that his slain ex-girlfriend, Jillian Wood, took out an Emergency Protective Order against Stewart in 2010 after she said he threatened to kill her and leave her body in a ditch.

In a news conference Thursday morning, police said Stewart was visiting his uncle at the Lakeview Apartments in the 1900 block of Gardiner Lane and were at the pool. Police said they do not know what made the situation escalate, but Stewart shot Wood. Stewart's mother reportedly tried to intervene, but Stewart then shot her and his 8-year-old daughter before killing himself.

Stewart's uncle and 12-year-old son were able to escape the shooting.

Police said the murders appeared to be premeditated.
