LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Just one week from the 139th Kentucky Derby and thousands poured into Churchill Downs for opening night of the third annual Downs After Dark.

From music to acrobatics to the races themselves there was fun for people of all ages. There was also a chance for those who came to take a free photo with the NCAA Championship Basketball trophy.

“It’s the best atmosphere you could possibly imagine," Alena Colburn said.

Gates opened at 4pm and 11 races took place. Despite rain turnout did remain high.

“When I first got here there was barely anybody here and I thought, 'Uh-oh, there's no going to be very many people,' but once the races started people started filing in," Kate Hunsaker said.

Those who celebrated the beginning of the race season at Churchill Downs say. Saturday night was a warm up for the fastest two minutes in sports.

“It’s a little rainy tonight, but I have faith that next week it's going to be perfect weather. It's just going to be hopping. It's the best time of the year. "
