LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Many people across Kentuckiana are now surprised to learn that they have more time to pay their LG&E bills due to a change in payment deadline.

Rates for LG&E and customers went up at the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1 to pay for different projects the company is working on. On average, a customer using 1,000 kilowatts per month will now pay about $5 extra a month but they are also getting extra time to pay that bill; more than three weeks.

But there's also no grace period now that the entire bill needs to be paid on the due date or you are hit with that late fee.

“It's a good thing because you have a longer period to pay your bill, but it being winter time if it's lower than 30 degrees don’t shut it off,” Jodi Chappell, a LG&E customer, said.

And while customers are paying more, some consider the extended payment period a break on their wallets.

“It's helping out because a lot of people have to budget these days. It's a little harder on us having to go from check to check,” Theondre Oates, LG&E customer, said.

But others would like even more time to pay the increased rates.
