(WHAS11) - This is a consumer watch for all of you bank customers out there. Scam artists have been very busy lately with a new phishing technique designed to steal your money. WHAS 11's Andy Treinen has this warning.
He recently got a note from the Better Business Bureau warning about a scam that has really started to peek over the last 36 hours.
It comes in the form of a text message to holders of Wachovia credit.
Here’s what it looks like: Wachovia alert your card starting with 482 has been deactivated. Please contact us at 804-715-9368 to reactivate your card.
People who dial that number on the robot-text are asked by an auto attendant to key in their account number, expiration date and pin. DON’T DO IT!
"Hopefully we've headed it off early on. We try to work with other better business bureaus to make sure that the word gets out very quickly when something happens here or across the country. We try to contact each other in order to try to send out that message early. So that's what we're working on now just getting it out educating consumers and letting them know that this is happening and not to fall for it," says Reanna Smith-Hamblin/Better Business Bureau
The better business bureau is working with Wachovia, who are victims of the scam as well. At this point other bank cards are not affected, but con artists are very creative, and it's only a matter of time.
Andy says a bank will never contact you via text to try to get personal information.
If you're ever unsure and you have questions just contact your bank directly.
