LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- In this cold weather, even a minor snowfall can cost you big time.

“It's those little things that you just don't think about, until it happens to you,” Brownsboro Hardware and Paint Manager Doug Carroll said

Fortunately--most issues can be avoided with a trip to your local hardware store.

“We pride ourselves on always trying to keep in what we call the 3 s's-- salt, shovels and sleds,” Carroll said

“We also sold about 500 of the foam faucet outdoor spigot covers in about 2 hours,” Carroll said.

And when you’re indoors taking small steps could save you a lot of trouble.

“When it gets this cold you want keep the water flowing throughout your house, just a small trickle of water throughout your sinks. It's much harder for moving water to freeze,” Carroll said.

And for around three bucks, a lock de-icer could be the key to getting to work on time.

“When you go out to your car early and you're going to work and you can't get in your car because you can’t stick your key in the ignition,  you just press this de-icer and it releases the liquid and thaws out your locks so you can put your key in,” Carroll said.
