CLARK COUNTY, Ind. – Sherman Minton Bridge maintenance and regularly scheduled inspections will require periodic lane closures beginning Monday, Oct. 14.
All lanes will be reopened when hourly traffic counts show volumes are the heaviest. All eastbound lanes will be reopened by 7 a.m. each weekday for the morning rush into Louisville. Hourly traffic counts show that westbound traffic is lighter, except on Friday evenings. All westbound lanes will be reopened between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. for the Friday evening rush.
To minimize inconvenience to the motoring public, the regularly scheduled bridge inspection will immediately follow the bridge maintenance work. The arm’s length inspections must occur during daylight hours while maintenance work may also take place at night. Maintenance contractors may close up to two lanes at night, allowing access to the center lane in each direction.
The scope of the bridge maintenance work includes asphalt joint replacement, stringer repairs (longitudinal beams that run parallel to traffic), limited fastener replacement, bridge drainage system repairs and slopewall repairs.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) coordinated the maintenance schedule with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet as the Sherman Minton Bridge serves an alternate route during I-65 Downtown Crossing construction. Indiana and Kentucky are splitting cost for Sherman Minton Bridge maintenance over the Ohio River, and Indiana is responsible for the approach spans over the Indiana shoreline.
INDOT estimates that the maintenance and inspections will be completed before the Thanksgiving travel holiday.
