LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- A front-runner in the 2014 election for Clark County Sheriff has halted his campaign amid accusations of offering a friend a $70,000 per year job that wouldn’t even require him to show-up.

Larry Brooks said he used his iPhone to secretly record Major Chuck Adams making the offer in February 2012.

Brooks said the offer was in exchange for campaign contributions, of which he said he has already contributed several thousand dollars to Adams’ campaign.

The accusations have spurred an investigation by Clark County Prosecutor, Steve Stewart.

Stewart said it is unclear if any criminal charges will stem from the allegations, but he will be exploring all of it.

Danny Rodden, the current Clark County Sheriff, said Adams is still on the department staff, but he has been removed from the position of spokesperson while the investigation is ongoing.

Adams is undergoing surgery and unavailable for comment.  Brooks’ attorney is expected to issue a statement soon.
