LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Many spent this Memorial Day soaking in the sun at Churchill Downs.

The track was open for a special day of Monday racing while celebrating military heroes.

Active military and veterans received free admission.

Bugler Steve Buttleman put up flags around winners circle. It’s something he’s been doing for years on Memorial Day and Independence Day.

“I feel like this pagoda is sort of an extension of my home in a way. I’m here so much and it’s such a beautiful setting that I think it makes it even more spectacular with the flags and the color added to it on special days,” he said.

Horseracing lovers who are fans of the night racing series can attend the event on Saturday, June 15.

The spring meet runs through June 30.
