LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Children as young as six were sparing on Saturday as a part of the Louisville Fencing Center's monthly competition.
Young fencers are taught the basics of the Olympic sport and given a chance to show their skills. The competition was also designed to help students prepare for a stricter tournament experience.
"They're psychologically ready for everything they have to deal with, plus it's kind of fun. The kids get to come out and spar a little bit, it's not like a classroom environment," said Ken Hagen, a fellow fencer.
The Louisville Fencing Center is located in the 1400 block of W. Muhammed Ali Blvd. They provide fencing summer camps for kids ages six and up, starting in June.
