LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was hit by a falling tree limb. It happened during Wednesday’s severe thunderstorm. The boy was riding his scooter when the limb fell on top of him in eastern Jefferson County.

The brutal storm unleashed with fury.

“It’s just one of those things that, with this time of year and the weather, you just don’t know what to expect,” LMPD spokesperson Carey Klain said.

A man on Deerfield Lane in St. Matthews, where the boy lives, saw a neighborhood boy racing home in the wind and rain. But, then he stopped after a tree limb collapsed across the road behind him.

The neighbor Mohammed Moghimi described what happened next, “I saw him looking for his brother, I said, there is nothing here, he was happy, he went home. Then he came back again, I was just sitting there, and then I saw there was something serious and he was crying and I saw his father and everybody now.”

The tree had fallen on the boy’s brother who was following him on a scooter.

“It was the worst case,” Moghimi said. “You can’t describe it, the worst case.”

Neighbors and the boy’s father used a jack to free the boy from under the tree. He was unconscious when they pulled him out. A St. Matthew’s police officer put him in a cruiser and rushed him to Baptist East hospital.

“At this point, there’s nothing other than just a tragedy, a horrific accident here today,” Klain said. “It’s just something that nobody wants to have happen but, right now, our investigators are out here and the hospital is doing everything they can.”

The boy was transported from Baptist East hospital to Kosair Children’s Hospital. It’s unclear if he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
