JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A dispute is emerging between the city of Jeffersonville and its treatment of its homeless population. Because the homeless shelter is full dozens stay under I-65 at Exit 0. But the city did a homeless camp sweep to clean up the area, asking people to move a few blocks to a less populated area of downtown.
Jeffersonville city attorney Les Merkley said the camp is a health hazard with debris, urine, and feces.
But people say the city didn't notify them and workers took their personal belongings. The city said it tried to throw away only trash but admitted there's a possibility more got thrown away.
Thursday the homeless outreach charity Jesus Cares at Exit 0 fed people and gave out clothes, sleeping bags, and blankets. Founder Paul Stensrud said the city could have prevented the surprise sweep.
