(WHAS11) - The tragic accident on I-65 that left 11 people dead is a reminder of just how dangerous cross-over accidents can be.
Cable barriers were in place at the site of this crash but they were not strong enough to stop a fully loaded semi.
WHAS11 News is taking a look at cable barriers and what they can handle.
At the scene, the track marks lead right to the cable barriers along I-65.
The semi rolled right over the protective wires.
Andrea Clifford with the Kentucky Transportation Department says Kentucky has the strongest cable barriers possible, designed to stop cars, vans and some trucks.
But with the speed of the accident and the full load, even the heavy duty barriers couldn't stop the semi carrying brake drums.
In some instances, if a semi is going slow enough and doesn't have a full load they can stop tractor trailers.
There are 51 miles of cable barriers in Jefferson County and those barriers have stopped 700 vehicles.
The cable barriers along 65 there were installed last year.
The County Judge of Executive in Hart County says where the accident happened is a dangerous stretch of roadway where there have been a number of fatalities.
